Make sure to register all vehicles when establishing your account so you get the correct amount of mounting strips. It mounts on dualock (velcro like) strips and is removable and can be moved from car to car. The transponder mounts to your vehicle's windshield, right behind the rearview mirror. Account information is sent back and forth between your transponder and the plaza and your prepaid toll balance is debited. This transponder communicates through radio signals with the toll plazas as you drive through them. When you open your account you are issued a small device called a "transponder". You can open your I-PASS account using a credit card or check. This process takes approximately 24 hours.
Motorist's who choose, also sign up for automatic replenishment by credit card so that when their account balance falls below $10.00, a $40.00 (minimum) replenishment is credited to their account. As the user drives through the toll collection lanes, the individual toll at that location is electronically deducted from their prepaid toll balance. I-PASS users pay a refundable security deposit ($20.00, or $10 for those choosing automatic replenishment) for the use of the equipment and then prepay their tolls into an account ($40.00 minimum). Users of the Tollway are encouraged to open an account that allows them to travel through the toll plazas faster, in many cases without having to stop, and to avoid having to handle cash toll payments. I-PASS is the Illinois Tollway's Electronic Toll Collection Program.
